1. Une panne = a breakdown / failure

Quand quelque chose arrête de fonctionner, like your car, your phone, or even electricity.
Exemple : Il y a une panne d’internet = There is an internet outage.


2. Le dépanneur

  • En France : c’est the repair person — someone who comes to fix the problem.
    Exemple : J’appelle le dépanneur = I’m calling the repair guy.
  • Au Québec : a small convenience store, like a mini-market.
    Exemple (Québec) : Je vais au dépanneur pour acheter du pain = I’m going to the corner store to buy some bread.

3. Tomber en panne = to break down / to have a breakdown
You use this when your car or machine stops working.
Exemple : Ma voiture est tombée en panne = My car broke down.
