Opening
The weight of a name
IdentityComplicity
Scene overview
We open on a battlefield at dusk — bodies, broken banners, smoke rising from a conquered village. VAREN, late 30s, moves through the wreckage with the efficiency of a man who has done this many times. He is loyal, decorated, certain. He receives orders from a cold-eyed general. He follows them. The village burns.
Among the dead: his own kin. He didn't know. He didn't ask. The horror of the opening is not in what Varen feels — it's in what he doesn't feel. The player inhabits a man who is still, in this moment, a monster by any measure, and doesn't yet know it.
"A good soldier doesn't ask where the fire goes — only that it burns where he's told."
Full cinematic script
EXT. ASHFEN VILLAGE — DUSKSmoke rises from a dozen fires. The Iron Crown banner hangs from a cracked watchtower. The sounds of battle have faded — what's left is the aftermath. VAREN walks through it. He is young here, mid-thirties, his armour unscratched by anything personal. He moves with purpose, not hesitation.TITLE CARD: Seven Years Ago.A MESSENGER intercepts him, salutes.MessengerCommander. General Orath's compliments. He asks that you confirm the eastern quarter has been neutralised.VarenTell him it's done. The messenger leaves. Varen continues walking. He passes a doorway — inside, the shadow of furniture overturned, a child's toy on the ground. He doesn't stop. He doesn't look long.CLOSE ON: The toy. A carved wooden horse. Paint worn from years of handling.Varen (V.O.)They told us this village harboured traitors. I had no reason to doubt them. I never had reason to doubt them. That was, I would learn later, the point. He reaches a ridge. Below: the full scale of the devastation. Three hundred buildings. An entire valley, burning. He surveys it the way a man surveys a completed task.HOLD on his face. No guilt. No satisfaction. Just assessment. The glow of the fire lights him from below. For just a moment, he looks like something carved from the same flame destroying the village.CUT TO BLACK. Title: VAREN.
Gameplay design
The opening sequence is a guided prologue with deliberately limited player agency — you can move, but you cannot deviate. Every interactive option presented to the player (approach the doorway, examine the fallen soldier, speak to a survivor) leads to Varen refusing or being interrupted. This is intentional: the player should feel the rails. When the meaning of those rails becomes clear, the discomfort is the point.
PrologueThe Ashfen Campaign
Player controls Varen through the final minutes of the Ashfen suppression. Objectives: reach the ridge, report to command, secure the banner. All are completed without dramatic incident. The horror is entirely environmental.
LinearEnvironmental storytellingNo combat
Director's note — camera
The camera stays low throughout the prologue — Varen's perspective, ground level. We never get a true wide shot of the burning village until the very end, and when we do, the scale is overwhelming. Everything before it has been intimate and local: a toy, a doorframe, a single boot. The wide shot is the player's first moment of genuine horror, not Varen's.

Scene overview
Present day. Seven years later, Varen is a decorated Commander of the Iron Crown — respected, hollow. During a victory feast, a captured rebel is dragged before the court for a public execution. Before she dies, she says one sentence that unmakes everything Varen has built his identity on.
The Ashfen campaign was not intelligence. It was a test. General Orath needed to know if Varen would follow orders without question. The village was not a threat. It was a measuring instrument. And it worked.
"He chose you because you don't ask questions. How does it feel to have been the answer to someone else's?"
Full scene script — The Feast
INT. CITADEL GREAT HALL — NIGHTA feast in full swing. Long tables, firelight, the wealth of a conquering empire on display. VAREN sits near the head of the table, in the place of honour, but slightly removed from the revelry. He drinks. He watches. He is present and absent simultaneously. GENERAL ORATH — older, satisfied — presides at the table's head.A commotion at the doors. GUARDS drag in a prisoner — a woman, thirties, dressed in rebel colours. Her hands are bound. Gameplay design
Mission 1The Feast of Wolves
Cutscene-heavy. Player controls Varen walking out of the feast. First true moment of player agency: they can confront Orath immediately, return to their chambers, or walk to the prison where the Red Wren is being held.
Choice pointCharacter-defining
Mission 2Questions Without Answers
Varen investigates Orath's records. Stealth section through the citadel archive. The documents confirm everything the rebel said. Optional: free the Red Wren before she's executed at dawn — or let it happen. Sets tone for the entire game's moral texture.
StealthOptional rescueMajor consequence
Director's note — camera
During the feast scene: the camera never leaves Varen's face from the moment the Red Wren begins speaking. We watch the realisation cross him — not as a dramatic collapse, but as a subtle settling, like a tower whose foundation has shifted an inch. Rack focus to Orath across the hall. He's smiling at someone else. He knows Varen is watching. He's choosing not to look.
Beat III
Rising Action
A soldier without a cause
RevolutionIdentityRedemption begins
Overview
Varen deserts. He hunts General Orath across the kingdom, a one-man campaign with a single objective. But revenge is a narrow road, and on it he keeps encountering the rebellion he once crushed — people who know his face and what it cost them. He meets SORA, a rebel strategist who sees in him not an asset but a mirror: a man who chose duty over conscience.
Grudgingly, he joins their cause. Each mission peels back another layer: the empire is built on exactly the machinery Varen spent years enforcing. He is both liberator and architect of the cage. The rising action is where the game opens up — and where the player begins to understand that revenge won't be enough.
Five story missions
Mission 3Ghost Soldier
Varen, now a deserter with a bounty on his head, tracks Orath's movements through the eastern provinces. He passes through the ruins of Ashfen — now a ghost town. No fight here: just walking. Environmental storytelling. He finds something he left behind seven years ago.
No combatFlashback sequenceKey item discovery
Mission 4Red Wolves
Varen stumbles into a rebel ambush intended for an imperial supply convoy. He fights — instinctively on the wrong side, then corrects. SORA is commanding the ambush. She recognises him. The mission ends with an uneasy standoff rather than alliance. She lets him go. He isn't sure why.
CombatCompanion introductionMoral ambiguity
Mission 5The Price of Iron
Orath's trail leads to a mining operation — slaves, most of them from rebel families. Varen was here once, years ago, to secure the perimeter. He didn't look inside. Now he does. He can free the miners alone (high difficulty) or accept Sora's offer to work together. First true cooperation mission if chosen.
Optional co-opReputation shiftHigh stakes
Mission 6To Know a Name
Sora takes Varen to meet the rebel council. Most want him dead. He must make a case for himself — not for mercy, but for usefulness. The dialogue system here is the game's most complex: every option reveals something true about Varen. There is no perfect answer. The council votes. The result is always close.
Dialogue-heavyFaction standingNo combat
Mission 7Where Orath Hides
Varen finally has real intelligence on Orath's location — a fortified manor in the highlands. The rebellion wants to turn the assault into a broader campaign. Varen wants one thing. Tension between personal revenge and collective strategy comes to a head. Player chooses the approach: solo infiltration or coordinated rebel assault. Both paths converge at the same door.

Key dialogue — Sora and Varen, Mission 4
EXT. FOREST ROAD — POST-AMBUSHVaren is on one knee, catching his breath. Imperial soldiers dead around him. Rebel fighters stand in a loose perimeter. SORA approaches. She is younger than him, watchful, unhurried. She looks at him the way a surgeon looks at a wound.SoraYou fought the imperials. Reflex, or choice?VarenAsk me again when I know the answer.SoraI know who you are, Commander. I was at the Mira river when your forces broke the crossing. I lost seven people that day.VarenI'm not going to apologise.SoraI'm not asking you to. I'm telling you that I'm aware, and that I'm still not killing you, and that you should consider what that costs me.Beat.VarenWhy?SoraBecause you know everything about how they move, how they think, where they're weak. And because whatever happened at the feast, you walked out of that citadel and haven't gone back. She turns to leave.Sora (over her shoulder)We're moving camp tonight. You can follow at a distance if you want. Don't expect anyone to be glad you're there. She walks away. Varen watches her go. After a long moment, he follows.
Director's note — camera
The montage midpoint of Act II mirrors the prologue: same battlefields, same camera angles, different uniform. When Varen fights alongside rebels at a location he once suppressed, cut between past and present using identical shot compositions. Same ridge. Same smoke. Different flag. The player should feel the geography before they consciously recognise what it means.

Overview
Varen finds Orath. He gets his revenge. And it feels like ash. In the aftermath, the rebellion discovers who Varen really is — the commander behind the Ashfen burnings, the Mira crossing, the Corrath purge. Sora confronts him. Half the rebel council wants him dead. The other half wants to use him. Nobody trusts him — including himself.
This is the game's lowest point: not a battlefield defeat, but an identity collapse. Varen has spent the entire story so far with one purpose — and now that purpose is gone. What remains is only the question of what he is when stripped of every cause he's served.
"Killing Orath didn't unmake what I did. I think some part of me knew that. I just didn't have anywhere else to aim."
Full scene script — the confrontation
INT. HIGHLAND MANOR — ORATH'S STUDY — NIGHTOrath is alone when Varen finds him. No dramatic escape attempt — he's an old man and he knows what this is. He pours two cups of wine. Pushes one toward Varen.OrathI wondered when you'd come. I expected it sooner, frankly. You always were efficient.VarenAshfen.OrathYes.VarenYou knew. The whole time. You knew there was no threat.OrathI needed a commander who would follow orders without developing a conscience about it afterwards. You were the best candidate. Ashfen confirmed it. I'm sorry it cost you something personal — I didn't know your family was there. That was genuinely unfortunate.VarenGenuinely unfortunate.OrathDoes it help you to hate me? I imagine it does. Simpler than the alternative.VarenWhat alternative?OrathThat you were exactly what you chose to be. I found you, yes. I didn't make you. You were a man who wanted a cause more than he wanted to be right. I simply provided one.Long silence. Varen's jaw tightens. This is the line that lands differently than he expected.OrathAre you going to kill me?VarenYes.OrathWill it help?Varen doesn't answer. The sound of a blade. CUT TO BLACK. When we return, Orath is dead. Varen sits across from him, not moving. The wine he was offered is untouched. He sits there a long time. Then: voices. Rebel fighters at the door. Then Sora. She sees Orath. She sees Varen. She sees what's on the table — Orath's campaign records. She starts reading. Her face changes.SoraThese are the Mira orders. Your signature.VarenYes.SoraAnd Corrath. And Ashfen.VarenYes.The rebel fighters are now very still. Someone's hand goes to a weapon.Sora (very quietly)How long have you known I was at Mira?VarenSince the ambush. You told me.SoraAnd you said nothing.VarenNo.She stares at him for a long time. Then she turns and walks out. The fighters follow. Varen remains alone with what he's done and what he is.
Major player choice — the chapel
After the confrontation, Varen finds a ruined chapel on the manor grounds. He is alone. He carries Orath's sigil — the symbol of everything he served. The player is given a single unspoken choice: what does Varen do with it?
Choice AKeep it
Varen pockets the sigil. He is not ready to let go. Affects dialogue in later chapters — he is more guarded, more prone to old instincts. Harder redemption path. Potentially the most honest choice.
Choice BBury it
He digs a small hole at the chapel altar and puts it in the ground. He doesn't speak. He doesn't pray. Neutral path — the game's most common choice in playtesting. Signals readiness to move forward without claiming he's healed.
Choice CLeave it
He places it on the altar and walks away. The most overtly symbolic choice — and the one the game refuses to validate or condemn. Sora will notice he no longer carries it. She will not comment directly.
Director's note — camera
The chapel scene: no music. Extreme close-up on Varen's hands throughout. We see the sigil, we see the choice being made — but the camera never pulls back to show Varen's face. The audience fills in his expression themselves. It's more powerful that way. Cut to exterior when it's done: just the sound of wind through the broken chapel roof.

Overview
The rebellion storms the capital. Varen fights at the front — not for revenge now, but for something he can only name by not naming it. He reaches the King. And the King, unlike Orath, does not wait to be killed. He offers Varen exactly what some part of him has always wanted: a cause, an order, a place in the world that requires nothing of his conscience. Be the weapon again. Rule in the King's name. Be what you were built to be.
The temptation is written to be genuinely compelling. Varen refusing it should feel like a cost, not a victory.
Final boss script — the king's offer
INT. THRONE ROOM — NIGHTThe battle is ending. Smoke rises through the high windows. The throne room is emptied of court — only KING ALDRIC remains, standing at the throne, not sitting in it. He is older than Varen expected. Tired. He watches Varen enter with something that looks almost like relief.King AldricVaren. I hoped it would be you.VarenYour Majesty.King AldricThe rebels are in the city. You know what comes next. The mob, the purges, the fifty different factions that agreed on nothing except removing me. I give them three months before they're killing each other.VarenThat's not my problem.King AldricIsn't it? You've fought alongside them. You know what they are. Idealists and survivors and people with very long memories and very sharp knives. There is no revolution that doesn't devour itself, Varen. There is only order or chaos. You know which you prefer. You've always known. He moves to a side table. Pours wine — same gesture as Orath. Varen notices.King AldricRule in my name. Not as a weapon. As a regent. Legitimate. Recognised. I'll sign whatever document you need. You stabilise the city, you protect the people who didn't choose any of this — the ones who just want to live. That's worth something, isn't it? More than whatever the rebels are going to build on this ruin?VarenYou're asking me to betray them.King AldricI'm asking you to do what soldiers do. Find the side that saves the most lives and serve it. You were very good at that once.Long silence. Varen looks at the throne. Looks at Aldric. Looks at the floor — which is the same stone as the Ashfen village square, though neither man says so. Then:VarenThe last time someone told me which side saves the most lives, I burned a village of farmers. He drops his sword. Points it at the King. The King looks at it. Then at Varen's face. He understands.King AldricI see. Then let's be done with it.The fight begins. Multi-phase. The King is not the greatest warrior — but the throne room is designed as a trap. The room itself fights Varen as much as the King does.
Boss design — three phases
Phase 1The King's Guard
The King activates hidden guardsmen embedded in the throne room walls — veterans, loyal unto death. Varen fights through them while Aldric watches from the throne. The message: this is what loyalty looks like from the other side.
Combat wavePositional strategy
Phase 2The Throne Room
Aldric fights himself — not with a soldier's skill, but with decades of traps built into this room. Pressure plates, hidden blades, a ceiling that descends on a mechanism. The room was built to kill exactly this kind of intrusion.
Environmental combatPuzzle elements
Phase 3King to King
One-on-one. Aldric, stripped of all advantage, fights bare. He is not performing now. He is honest in a way he never was at court. The fight is brutal and brief. The player can end it with lethal or non-lethal finisher — first time the game offers this choice in combat.
DuelMoral choiceAffects epilogue
Director's note — camera
When Varen stands over the defeated King, pull back slowly to reveal the burning throne room — and let the composition settle into an exact mirror of the prologue's burning village. Same angle. Same colour temperature. Same lone figure standing in the centre of destruction he had a hand in. Varen sees it too. He lowers his sword. No music until the scene cuts.

Overview
The crown is gone. The capital holds, barely. Varen is offered a place in the new order — general, advisor, figurehead, symbol. He declines all of it. Not because he's uninterested in the world being better, but because he understands now that his presence in any formal power structure is a weight it doesn't need. He was built by an empire. He should not be the one who decides what replaces it.
He travels back to Ashfen. He doesn't rebuild it. He doesn't confess to survivors and expect forgiveness. He doesn't perform penance. He just works — quietly, without absolution, without an audience. The game ends before we see whether it means anything.
"Redemption isn't a moment. It's every morning you choose not to become what you were."
Three alternate endings
Dark ending
The Weight Stays
Varen returns to Ashfen — but he can't stay. Every night he dreams of faces he never saw clearly enough to remember. He leaves before dawn, one final desertion. The game ends on an empty road with no destination. He is free in the way that exile is freedom.
Condition: Kept Orath's sigil. Let the Red Wren die. Chose solo approach at every major junction.
Neutral ending
The Planting
Varen works the land at Ashfen. A few survivors have returned. They don't welcome him, but they don't drive him away. One morning a child hands him something — a seed, from a kind he doesn't recognise. He plants it without asking what it is. The game ends on his hands in the dirt, the village quiet around him. The seed may grow. It may not.
Condition: Buried the sigil. Balanced rebel and personal choices. Standard playthrough.
Light ending
What Remains
Sora finds him at Ashfen, six months later. She doesn't come with a mission or a title. She brings a small delegation — survivors from Mira, from Corrath, from Ashfen itself. They have questions only Varen can answer. Not for forgiveness. For understanding: what happened, in their own words, placed in the record. It isn't absolution. It's something harder and more honest. Varen answers every question.
Condition: Left the sigil at the altar. Spared the King. Maintained Sora's trust throughout.
Final cinematic — the seed (canonical)
EXT. ASHFEN — DAWNThe village is quiet. Varen is alone in a field at the edge of the ruins. He is on one knee. His hands — scarred, worn, unmistakably a soldier's hands — press a seed into dark earth.EXTREME CLOSE UP. The seed disappears under his fingers. He sits back on his heels. Looks at the turned earth. Then at his hands. The hands that burned this place. The hands that just tried — in one very small way — to undo that.Varen (V.O.)I don't know if this will grow. I don't know if I'll be here to see it. I don't know if it matters, in the way I used to think things had to matter — immediately, visibly, completely. He stands. Looks at the field. Looks at the ruins of the village beyond. Morning light beginning to warm the stone.Varen (V.O.)I planted it anyway.HOLD. The wind moves through the empty field. The CAMERA BEGINS pulling back — slowly, slowly — the same movement as the prologue's reveal shot, reversed. This time, the village comes into frame not as a scene of destruction but of bare possibility.FADE TO BLACK before the pull-back completes. We never see the full picture. The game ends before we know what grows.SILENCE. Then: a single sustained note. Credits.
Director's note — camera and sound
The entire epilogue should be filmed at ground level — the camera never rises above knee height. Everything we see is from the perspective of something growing, or trying to. The final pull-back is the only wide shot in the game that doesn't feel enormous — because this time, emptiness is possibility rather than devastation. The single credit note should be a low cello, the same instrument used sparingly throughout — now finally allowed to resolve.
