The village burns.

Among the dead: his own kin. He didn't know. He didn't ask. The horror of the opening is not in what Varen feels — it's in what he doesn't feel. The player inhabits a man who is still, in this moment, a monster by any measure, and doesn't yet know it.

EXT. ASHFEN VILLAGE — DUSK Smoke rises from a dozen fires. The Iron Crown banner hangs from a cracked watchtower. The sounds of battle have faded — what's left is the aftermath. VAREN walks through it. He is young here, mid-thirties, his armour unscratched by anything personal. He moves with purpose, not hesitation. TITLE CARD: Seven Years Ago. A MESSENGER intercepts him, salutes. Messenger Commander. General Orath's compliments. He asks that you confirm the eastern quarter has been neutralised. Varen Tell him it's done. The messenger leaves. Varen continues walking. He passes a doorway — inside, the shadow of furniture overturned, a child's toy on the ground. He doesn't stop. He doesn't look long. CLOSE ON: The toy. A carved wooden horse. Paint worn from years of handling. Varen (V.O.) They told us this village harboured traitors. I had no reason to doubt them. I never had reason to doubt them. That was, I would learn later, the point. He reaches a ridge. Below: the full scale of the devastation. Three hundred buildings. An entire valley, burning. He surveys it the way a man surveys a completed task. HOLD on his face. No guilt. No satisfaction. Just assessment. The glow of the fire lights him from below. Gameplay design

The opening sequence is a guided prologue with deliberately limited player agency — you can move, but you cannot deviate. Every interactive option presented to the player (approach the doorway, examine the fallen soldier, speak to a survivor) leads to Varen refusing or being interrupted. This is intentional: the player should feel the rails. When the meaning of those rails becomes clear, the discomfort is the point.

Prologue The Ashfen Campaign

Player controls Varen through the final minutes of the Ashfen suppression. Objectives: reach the ridge, report to command, secure the banner. All are completed without dramatic incident. The horror is entirely environmental.

The Ashfen campaign was not intelligence. It was a test. General Orath needed to know if Varen would follow orders without question. The village was not a threat. It was a measuring instrument. And it worked.

Full scene script — The Feast
INT. CITADEL GREAT HALL — NIGHT A feast in full swing. Long tables, firelight, the wealth of a conquering empire on display. VAREN sits near the head of the table, in the place of honour, but slightly removed from the revelry. He drinks. He watches. He is present and absent simultaneously. GENERAL ORATH — older, satisfied — presides at the table's head. A commotion at the doors. GUARDS drag in a prisoner — a woman, thirties, dressed in rebel colours. Her hands are bound. She has been beaten but her eyes are clear. Orath A gift for our entertainment. The rebel they call the Red Wren. She has something she'd like to say before her sentence is carried out. Laughter from the table. Orath is performing. The prisoner is walked to the centre of the hall. She looks around slowly — she is reading the room, not fearing it. Her eyes find VAREN. She holds there. Red Wren Commander Varen. I know who you are. I know what you did at Ashfen. Silence falls faster than expected. Something in her tone. Varen I carried out my orders. Red Wren Yes. That's what I mean. Ask your general what those orders were for. Beat. She looks at ORATH. Red Wren (cont.) Ask him what Ashfen was before it was a battlefield. Ask him who sent the intelligence report. Ask him who approved the suppression of a village that had never once harboured a rebel — not one — and then ask him why he chose you specifically to lead the campaign. ORATH signals. Guards move to remove her. Red Wren (called back over her shoulder) He needed a weapon that wouldn't ask questions. He found one. That's the whole story, Commander. She is taken out. The door closes. The feast resumes — carefully, quickly, as if nothing happened. VAREN sits. His cup is still raised halfway to his mouth. He sets it down very slowly. He looks at ORATH. ORATH will not meet his eyes. For the first time in seven years, that is meaningful. SLOW PULL BACK as the feast noise rises around Varen — he is an island. Then CUT TO: EXT. CITADEL COURTYARD — NIGHT. Varen walks out alone into the cold. He stands under the open sky. After a long moment: Varen (quietly, to himself) Ask him why he chose you specifically. He says nothing else. The CAMERA HOLDS on him until the torch behind him gutters and nearly dies.

Cutscene-heavy. Player controls Varen walking out of the feast. First true moment of player agency: they can confront Orath immediately, return to their chambers, or walk to the prison where the Red Wren is being held.

Grudgingly, he joins their cause. Each mission peels back another layer: the empire is built on exactly the machinery Varen spent years enforcing. He is both liberator and architect of the cage. The rising action is where the game opens up — and where the player begins to understand that revenge won't be enough.

Varen, now a deserter with a bounty on his head, tracks Orath's movements through the eastern provinces. He passes through the ruins of Ashfen — now a ghost town. No fight here: just walking. Environmental storytelling. He finds something he left behind seven years ago.

Varen finds Orath. He gets his revenge. And it feels like ash. In the aftermath, the rebellion discovers who Varen really is — the commander behind the Ashfen burnings, the Mira crossing, the Corrath purge. Sora confronts him. Half the rebel council wants him dead. The other half wants to use him. Nobody trusts him — including himself.

This is the game's lowest point: not a battlefield defeat, but an identity collapse. Varen has spent the entire story so far with one purpose — and now that purpose is gone. What remains is only the question of what he is when stripped of every cause he's served.

INT. HIGHLAND MANOR — ORATH'S STUDY — NIGHT Orath is alone when Varen finds him. No dramatic escape attempt — he's an old man and he knows what this is. He pours two cups of wine. Pushes one toward Varen. Orath I wondered when you'd come. I expected it sooner, frankly. You always were efficient. Varen Ashfen. Orath Yes. Varen You knew. The whole time. You knew there was no threat. Orath I needed a commander who would follow orders without developing a conscience about it afterwards. You were the best candidate. Ashfen confirmed it. I'm sorry it cost you something personal — I didn't know your family was there. That was genuinely unfortunate. Varen Genuinely unfortunate. Orath Does it help you to hate me? I imagine it does. Simpler than the alternative. Varen What alternative? Orath That you were exactly what you chose to be. I found you, yes. I didn't make you. You were a man who wanted a cause more than he wanted to be right. I simply provided one. Long silence. Varen's jaw tightens. This is the line that lands differently than he expected. Orath Are you going to kill me? Varen Yes. Orath Will it help? Varen doesn't answer. The sound of a blade. CUT TO BLACK. When we return, Orath is dead. Varen sits across from him, not moving. The wine he was offered is untouched. He sits there a long time. Then: voices. Rebel fighters at the door. Then Sora. She sees Orath. She sees Varen. She sees what's on the table — Orath's campaign records. She starts reading. Her face changes. Sora These are the Mira orders. Your signature. Varen Yes. Sora And Corrath. And Ashfen. Varen Yes. The rebel fighters are now very still. Someone's hand goes to a weapon. Sora (very quietly) How long have you known I was at Mira? Varen Since the ambush. You told me. Sora And you said nothing. Varen No. She stares at him for a long time. Then she turns and walks out. The fighters follow. Varen remains alone with what he's done and what he is.

After the confrontation, Varen finds a ruined chapel on the manor grounds. He is alone. He carries Orath's sigil — the symbol of everything he served. The player is given a single unspoken choice: what does Varen do with it?

And the King, unlike Orath, does not wait to be killed. He offers Varen exactly what some part of him has always wanted: a cause, an order, a place in the world that requires nothing of his conscience. Be the weapon again. Rule in the King's name. Be what you were built to be.

The temptation is written to be genuinely compelling. Varen refusing it should feel like a cost, not a victory.

INT. THRONE ROOM — NIGHT The battle is ending. Smoke rises through the high windows. The throne room is emptied of court — only KING ALDRIC remains, standing at the throne, not sitting in it. He is older than Varen expected. Tired. He watches Varen enter with something that looks almost like relief. King Aldric Varen. I hoped it would be you. Varen Your Majesty. King Aldric The rebels are in the city. You know what comes next. The mob, the purges, the fifty different factions that agreed on nothing except removing me. I give them three months before they're killing each other. Varen That's not my problem. King Aldric Isn't it? You've fought alongside them. You know what they are. Idealists and survivors and people with very long memories and very sharp knives. There is no revolution that doesn't devour itself, Varen. There is only order or chaos. You know which you prefer. You've always known. He moves to a side table. Pours wine — same gesture as Orath. Varen notices. King Aldric Rule in my name. Not as a weapon. As a regent. Legitimate. Recognised. I'll sign whatever document you need. You stabilise the city, you protect the people who didn't choose any of this — the ones who just want to live. That's worth something, isn't it? More than whatever the rebels are going to build on this ruin? Varen You're asking me to betray them. King Aldric I'm asking you to do what soldiers do. Find the side that saves the most lives and serve it. You were very good at that once. Long silence. Varen looks at the throne. Looks at Aldric. Looks at the floor — which is the same stone as the Ashfen village square, though neither man says so. Then: Varen The last time someone told me which side saves the most lives, I burned a village of farmers. He drops his sword. Points it at the King. The King looks at it. Then at Varen's face. He understands. King Aldric I see. Then let's be done with it. The fight begins. Multi-phase. The King is not the greatest warrior — but the throne room is designed as a trap. The room itself fights Varen as much as the King does.

He should not be the one who decides what replaces it.

He travels back to Ashfen. He doesn't rebuild it. He doesn't confess to survivors and expect forgiveness. He doesn't perform penance. He just works — quietly, without absolution, without an audience. The game ends before we see whether it means anything.

The Planting

Varen works the land at Ashfen. A few survivors have returned. They don't welcome him, but they don't drive him away. One morning a child hands him something — a seed, from a kind he doesn't recognise. He plants it without asking what it is. The game ends on his hands in the dirt, the village quiet around him. The seed may grow. It may not.

Condition: Buried the sigil. Balanced rebel and personal choices. Standard playthrough.
Light ending

What Remains

Sora finds him at Ashfen, six months later. She doesn't come with a mission or a title. She brings a small delegation — survivors from Mira, from Corrath, from Ashfen itself. They have questions only Varen can answer. Not for forgiveness. For understanding: what happened, in their own words, placed in the record. It isn't absolution. It's something harder and more honest. Varen answers every question.

Final cinematic — the seed (canonical)
EXT. ASHFEN — DAWN The village is quiet. Varen is alone in a field at the edge of the ruins. He is on one knee. His hands — scarred, worn, unmistakably a soldier's hands — press a seed into dark earth. EXTREME CLOSE UP. The seed disappears under his fingers. He sits back on his heels. Looks at the turned earth. Then at his hands. The hands that burned this place. The hands that just tried — in one very small way — to undo that. Varen (V.O.) I don't know if this will grow. I don't know if I'll be here to see it. I don't know if it matters, in the way I used to think things had to matter — immediately, visibly, completely. He stands. Looks at the field. Looks at the ruins of the village beyond. Morning light beginning to warm the stone. Varen (V.O.) I planted it anyway. HOLD. The wind moves through the empty field. The CAMERA BEGINS pulling back — slowly, slowly — the same movement as the prologue's reveal shot, reversed. This time, the village comes into frame not as a scene of destruction but of bare possibility. FADE TO BLACK before the pull-back completes. We never see the full picture. The game ends before we know what grows. SILENCE. Then: a single sustained note. Credits.
Director's note — camera and sound The entire epilogue should be filmed at ground level — the camera never rises above knee height. Everything we see is from the perspective of something growing, or trying to. The final pull-back is the only wide shot in the game that doesn't feel enormous — because this time, emptiness is possibility rather than devastation. The single credit note should be a low cello, the same instrument used sparingly throughout — now finally allowed to resolve.
